Jacky Rosen Criticizes Tarkanian’s Defense of Trump’s Reckless NATO Comments

Henderson, Nev. – Today, Henderson community leader Jacky Rosen responded to her Republican opponent Danny Tarkanian’s statement supporting Donald Trump’s reckless suggestion that the United States does not have to honor its commitments to NATO allies:

“The safety and security of our nation is my number one priority, and we need to make smart and pragmatic decisions based on that. The fact that my opponent Danny Tarkanian actually agrees with Donald Trump’s outlandish comments undermining our military alliance with NATO demonstrates just how little he understands our national security priorities. To effectively address international threats around the world like terrorism, it’s critical that we maintain trust and uphold our commitments to our partners and allies around the globe. Danny Tarkanian is doubling down on Trump’s reckless foreign policy agenda that would make Southern Nevada less safe.”

According to an article by Michelle Rindels at The Associated Press, “On Trump’s statement that he might not defend allies in NATO against possible Russian aggression, Danny Tarkanian, a Nevada congressional candidate and husband of delegate Amy Tarkanian, said he believes Trump is saying NATO members should follow through on their promises to other members. ‘We should not be the only nation that fulfills their obligations and the other countries dont,’ he said.” [AP, 7/21/16]

New York Times: Donald Trump Sets Conditions For Defending NATO Allies. According to an article by David Sanger and Maggie Haberman at the New York Times, “Mr. Trump’s statement appeared to be the first time that a major candidate for president had suggested conditioning the United States’ defense of its major allies. It was consistent, however, with his previous threat to withdraw American forces from Europe and Asia if those allies fail to pay more for American protection.” [New York Times, 7/20/16]

NBC News: Donald Trump Remarks On NATO Trigger Alarm Bells In Europe. According to an article by Cassandra Vinograd at NBC News, “Donald Trump set off alarm bells in European capitals Thursday after suggesting he might not honor the core tenet of the NATO military alliance. Trump said the U.S. would not necessarily defend new NATO members in the Baltics in the event of Russian attack if he were elected to the White House … Trump’s comments were perceived by some analysts as carte blanche for Russia to intimidate NATO allies and a potential harbinger of the alliance’s collapse were Trump to be elected.
